Photography and taking photos

Photography and taking photos, until about a year ago never had a camera, well a proper camera that is. I didn’t know that much about photography and still don’t for that matter, but learning all the time, it more of luck than judgement on my part. Until about a year ago I’d used my mobile phone which was a Sony Ericsson k800i, a good phone as well as the camera it had on it. The camera on my phone had always been ok to take snaps of the kids or photos of where I’d been and was happy with it. I very rarely got around to printing the photos from my phone, maybe the odd one now and again. It’s more of looking at the photos I taken on my phone and to be honest that suited me until.......

I had joined RedGage a website in which you can earn from posting photos as well as written work. With RedGage and earning money through taking photos I had an interest but with my mobile phone camera I couldn’t take the photos I’d dreamed of taking. More frustration of not being able to take photos of things I want to. However, if I had a better camera could I take better photos, something I wasn’t sure about. It was also the cost of buying a better camera, but also would I know what to do with it. I’m a point and shot person and nothing more, I’m not one for checking to see if the light is right or if it on the right “F” stops and so on, far too much for me.

After months of looking at cameras in the shops and online and not really knowing anything about them, plus the fact of spending far too much money and not getting on with the camera I bought was frightening. I’m not good at spending large amounts of money, been too broke to many times and often it takes me forever to make a decision with that kind of money involved on something I know so little about, or unsure of. Okay the camera was £260 about $400 which isn’t that big amount but it is to someone and that someone was me.

After months of looking, wishing, reading reviews I decided to buy a new camera. It wasn’t going to be a DSLR but a so called bridge camera as I thought if I could get on with it I would buy a better one and besides it was cheaper than buying a DSLR. The camera I bought was a Fuji HS10, the HS20 as now replaced the HS10, I hadn’t a clue what to do with it, far too many buttons for my liking, and I was lost. Which button do you press, what settings do you need to be on, far too much to start with.

Over time those button still don’t really mean that much to me, I totally get mixed up with almost everything on the camera and use the auto function usually. What I do when I’m taking photos is to take several shots and then choose which I think is the best. I won’t ever be a top photography but at least I’m happy with what photos I now take. The photos I now take are so much better than the ones taken with my old mobile phone and I’m so much happier to show other people. And with being on RedGage they earn me a little bit extra cash and have paid for the camera I bought. I’m now looking a buying a new camera, this time a DSLR. At the moment as I write and hoping to get myself a Canon 550D 18MB camera I just need to go out and part with the cash. I will have no idea about how to use the new camera when I get it but I guess with time I will learn and I’m sure I will take some lovely photos to share with you.

Thank you for reading this and I hope you enjoy my photography work. If you would like to see any of my other Photography work or to Join RedGage click here

Great hub and pictures. I used a cheap camera when I first started. It is amazing what a real camera can do. We have been so used to whipping out our cameras and snapping away. Thanks for sharing.

That's a good camera, although I prefer a DSLR. Takes longer to figure out, but the becomes a real pleasure to use.

Photography is such an easy thing to fall into because for the most part everyone gets there the same way by starting with a point and shoot. It's also a highly addictive thing once you start getting into the higher end cameras and the equiptment there will always be something new on the market proclaiming to be bigger, badder and greater than the rest. Thanks for sharing your story and your images. Keep shooting becasue it is the best and only way to improve your work for the hobbyist and pro alike. Best of luck!
